ABOUT
THE ARTIST

Sigrid Eilertson perceives her art as an extension of her psyche. She weaves life experiences into the content of each work, allowing memories to become threads that literally create layers on the canvas. Her collages in particular are overlapping layers of her own personal growth experiences through the media of paper. The process has become a metaphor for her utter existence… a mental road map in which art therapy becomes the vehicle for catharsis. Sometimes she utilizes tangible mementos: train/bus/plane tickets, journal entries, photographs, hairs, etc… to create a story through paper collage on her canvas.

She has lived a full life, travelling the hippy trail in Europe, having been a truck driver, working on a Lakota Reservation in South Dakota, being employed in a psychiatric ward for 10 years as an art therapist and, most recently, becoming a mother. All of these experiences have had a profound effect on her art.

This exhibition is supported in part by the Virginia Commission for the Arts, which receives support from the Virginia General Assembly and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
