MULTI-WEEK CLASSES

We offer 6- and 10-week classes in a variety of mediums, for students of all ages. Most classes require a minimum of 4 students per class to run, but some classes may require more.

Beginner Wheel Throwing, Ceramics with Phillip Strauss | 4 Week Class
THURSDAYS, 5:30 - 7:30 PM | July 16th - August 6th | $160 per student

In this four-week beginner wheel-throwing course, you'll learn the fundamentals of pottery in a welcoming, creative studio environment while experiencing the magic of the potter’s wheel for yourself. Designed for students with little or no prior experience, this class introduces the essential techniques used by ceramic artists every day. You'll learn how to center clay, pull walls, trim forms, and create functional pieces such as bowls, cups, and small vessels. Along the way, you'll gain a deeper understanding of clay as a material, including how it is recycled and reclaimed within a working studio.

As your confidence grows, you'll explore glazing techniques that bring color, surface, and personality to your work. By the end of the course, you'll leave with several finished ceramic pieces and the skills needed to continue working independently in a community ceramics studio.

This 6-week beginner wheel-throwing class is designed for students with little to no prior experience. Held at The Art Center's public studio in Orange, the class introduces the fundamentals of making ceramics on the potter’s wheel in a shared studio environment. Students will learn essential wheel-throwing skills, including centering, pulling walls, trimming, and forming functional forms. Instruction also covers studio practices such as recycling and reclaiming clay, helping students understand the full lifecycle of the material. The class includes an introduction to glazing, with a focus on glaze application and layering techniques. By the end of the session, students will have several finished pieces and a strong foundation for continued work in a public ceramics studio.

Advanced Color Pencil with Kitty Dodd | 4 Week Class
MONDAYS, 1:00 - 3:00 PM | September 21st - October 12th | $160 per student

For those who have taken one of my “ beginner color pencil” classes…. This is where we have some fun.  Different mediums…. Different applications…. Using Grafix and suede board.  We will continue to experiment with the little colored stick!

Spend an evening getting your hands dirty and discovering the magic of the potter's wheel. Whether you're celebrating an anniversary, planning a first date, catching up with friends, or simply trying something new, Ceramic Date Night offers a creative experience that's equal parts fun, relaxing, and surprisingly addictive.

Your evening begins with a tour of our ceramics studio and gallery, followed by a demonstration from one of The Art Center's talented Resident Artists. Then it's your turn. With plenty of guidance and encouragement, you'll sit down at the wheel and create your own pottery from clay.

Most participants spend about 90 minutes on the wheel and create two to three pieces during their first session. No experience is necessary—just a willingness to try something new and have fun.

Once your pieces are complete, you'll choose from more than 60 beautiful glazes to give your work its final color and character. Our staff will then fire and finish your pottery, and 4-6 weeks later, you'll return to pick up your handmade creations—lasting reminders of a memorable evening.

Slab Building, Hand Building Workshop with Phillip Straus
WEDNESDAY, September 2nd| 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM | $45 per student

Discover the creative possibilities of slab-built pottery in this one-night workshop! Perfect for beginners, this hands-on class will introduce the fundamentals of working with clay slabs to create functional and decorative ceramic pieces. Students will learn basic slab-building techniques, including rolling, shaping, joining, and adding texture to clay. Whether you choose to make a mug, planter, tray, or your own unique design, you’ll leave having created a one-of-a-kind piece ready for firing and glazing.

All materials, tools, clay, and glaze are provided. No prior experience is necessary; just bring your creativity and be ready to get your hands dirty!

Immersive Altered Book Art Workshop with Cindy Pagan
FRIDAY, September 4th| 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM | $45 per student

Step beyond traditional crafting and into the world of immersive sculptural storytelling. In this atmospheric mixed media workshop, participants will transform a custom-engineered carved book structure into a glowing rain-soaked miniature world filled with layered depth, suspended rainfall, lighting effects, texture, and cinematic atmosphere. Inspired by hidden alleyways, forgotten pathways, stormy forests, and impossible worlds tucked between the pages, each piece will become a one-of-a-kind illuminated artwork.

Students will learn techniques for painting, environmental detailing, atmospheric layering, illusion-based design, and light integration while working from a professionally prepared architectural book base created specifically for this workshop experience.

Participants are encouraged to personalize their worlds through color, mood, scenery, and embellishment choices, ensuring every finished piece is uniquely their own.

No prior experience is required.

“ I CAN’T BELIEVE THAT IS COLOR PENCIL!!!”

I hear that a lot… and now I have the opportunity to teach about that little colored stick. We will start off with the basics. (or for some, a refresh) Please join me to see how wonderful art is created on paper. Please have: colored pencils( doh). Either Prismacolor or Dick Blick on Amazon. Just buy the size set you can afford… other colors can be added later, and I will have some on hand. A kneaded eraser, a pencil sharpener, any kind. I will supply the different papers. Just bring your willingness to learn, patience, and you will have a great experience.

Gelli Printing with Sigrid Ellertson
SATURDAY, September 12th| 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM | $45 per student

Are you interested in trying out Gelli printing but don’t know where to start? Or have you dipped your toes into the process and want more guidance on how to take it further? Join us for this class on Gelli printing, a quick and easy method of printing that uses a gelli plate, paint, and paper to easily create monoprints. In this class, you will learn to use a gelli plate to create your own print using natural materials. Flowers! Leaves! Twigs! All the fun nature stuff! No artistic background needed.

Fiber Play: Needle Felting and Textile Explorations with Jane Skafte
THURSDAY, September 17th| 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM | $45 per student

Discover the joy of transforming soft fibers into colorful works of art! In this playful, hands-on workshop, we’ll explore needle felting and a variety of textile techniques that invite experimentation, creativity, and a little bit of magic! Using wool roving, embroidery and embellishments, you’ll learn how to sculpt with a felting needle, create rich textures, build layered surfaces, and add decorative stitched details. Whether you’re interested in making whimsical creatures, abstract compositions, botanical forms, or small decorative objects, this class encourages curiosity and personal expression. 

Beginners are welcome, and more experienced makers will find plenty of opportunities to expand their skills and try new approaches.

Together in Sound: A Crystal Bowl Sound Bath Experience with Leslie Chisnell
FRIDAY, September 18th| 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM | $30 per student

A custom group crystal bowl sound bath blends breath work, intention setting, and sound to create a shared relaxation experience where participants are immersed in the soothing tones of crystal singing bowls. The harmonic vibrations support nervous system regulation, energetic balance, and deep rest in a calm, low-light environment.

This work supports people experiencing stress, chronic tension, deep-rooted trauma, and those ready to access a deeper level of healing in a supportive group environment.

 These immersive sessions are designed to regulate the nervous system, reduce stress physiology, and restore clarity and cohesion within groups. Using crystal singing bowls, therapeutic sound immersion, and structured breathwork practices, participants are guided into a state of deep parasympathetic activation—supporting mental reset, emotional balance, and improved focus.

Please bring yoga mat, 2 blankets, 2 pillows. Wear loose comfortable clothes. Water bottle and journal if you want to reflect upon your SB experience.  Eye pillows will be available to use.

Fundamentals of Figure Drawing, with Live model with Teresa Duke
SATURDAY, September 19th| 12:00 PM - 4:00 PM | $85 per student

This class focuses on the fundamentals of figure drawing, with an emphasis on developing a greater awareness of line, shape, form, texture, value, proportion, and composition. Students will learn to draw accurately from observation—developing the ability to see like an artist—while gaining practical skills in comparing, measuring, and understanding the principles of proportion.

The course includes an introduction to artistic anatomy, with attention given to important anatomical landmarks that help artists better understand and draw the human figure. As skills develop, students will learn how to create the illusion of form and volume through the careful use of value, light, and shadow.

Weekly exercises will explore a variety of mark-making techniques, including hatching, cross-hatching, and tonal blending. Students will also study and discuss master drawings from across the centuries, gaining insight into the approaches and techniques used by some of history’s greatest artists.

By the end of the session, students will have a strong foundation in figure drawing and the essential skills needed to continue their artistic development independently or through further instruction. Appropriate for artists of all experience levels.

Fun with Oils with Kathleen Hutter
SATURDAY, September 26th| 2:30 PM - 5:30 PM | $60 per student + $20 materials fee

For centuries, artists have been drawn to oil paint for its richness, luminosity, and remarkable versatility. In this four-week beginner course, you’ll discover why this timeless medium remains one of the most beloved ways to paint.

Designed for students with little or no prior experience, this class provides a welcoming introduction to the materials, techniques, and creative possibilities of oil painting. You’ll learn how to handle brushes, mix colors, build form, create light and shadow, and bring depth and atmosphere to your work. Along the way, you’ll discover one of oil painting’s greatest strengths: its forgiving nature. Oils remain workable for extended periods, allowing artists to revise, refine, and explore without feeling rushed.

Through demonstrations, guided exercises, and individual instruction, students will gain confidence using the essential tools of the medium, including brushes, palettes, palette knives, painting mediums, and solvents. We’ll explore the fundamentals of composition, color relationships, value, and observation while developing the skills needed to create successful paintings. Most importantly, this class is about learning to enjoy the process. You’ll experiment, make discoveries, and experience the unique satisfaction of watching a painting emerge layer by layer.

Understanding and Using Color with Confidence with Jane Skafte
TUESDAY, October 6th| 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM | $45 per student

Color is one of the most expressive and powerful elements in watercolor painting. In this workshop, you’ll learn practical color theory and immediately apply it to small watercolor studies and paintings of your own. With a deeper understanding of how color works, you’ll be better able to create paintings that reflect your intentions and capture the mood, atmosphere, and beauty you envision. We’ll begin with the fundamentals of color mixing and gradually explore more complex color relationships. Topics will include value, saturation, temperature, color harmony, complements, triads, and the use of color wheels as tools for making informed artistic choices. Please bring photo references for inspiration. These may include your own printed photographs as well as materials that contain colors you find compelling—fabric swatches, magazine clippings, postcards, packaging, natural objects, or other ephemera.

Pumpkin Heads & Woolly Wonders: A Halloween Needle Felting Workshop with Jane Skafte

In this festive needle felting workshop, you’ll create your own whimsical pumpkin-headed character using colorful wool and simple needle felting techniques. These charming creations can be spooky, sweet, mischievous, or downright magical—the choice is yours. You’ll learn the basics of needle felting as we sculpt pumpkins, shape expressive faces, and add personality with facial expressions and decorative details. No two pumpkin heads are ever alike, making this a wonderful opportunity to let your imagination run wild. Mask Making with Sigrid Eilertson
SATURDAY, October 24th| 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM | $45 per student

In the spirit of the spooktacular month of October, we will be offering a mask-making paper mache class with teacher Sigrid Eilertson. Explore the world of mask-making with a menagerie of paper mache forms in addition to an array of craft materials to enhance your mask to be nothing short of magical! All materials included. No artistic experience needed just bring your creative expression!

Studio Conversations
SATURDAY, July 11th| 1:30 PM-3:30 PM | $20 per student

Formed in 2020, Studio Conversations brings together local artists who share an interest in discussing their creative process and engaging critically with one another’s work. Led by a professional practicing artist and educator, the group meets monthly in a setting that encourages thoughtful conversation, careful observation, and constructive feedback. Members present artwork that is either completed or still in progress, and artists working in all media are welcome. Because discussions are grounded in the fundamentals of design and visual language, the exchange of ideas remains relevant across disciplines and levels of experience. The group was created to help artists sharpen their visual awareness, strengthen their ability to articulate ideas through the language of art, and deepen their understanding and appreciation of others' work through sustained dialogue and critique.

Sound Bath, A Full Body Crystal Bowl Sound Immersion
THURSDAY, October 29th| 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM | $30 per student

Art Lab Kids Day Summer Camps with Heather Johnson
1 Week Day Camp Sessions| 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM | $200 per camper

A creative, fun, and immersive week experience in painting,  printing, 3D sculpture, collage, and clay for 1st-6th graders. Mondays-Fridays, at the Art Center in Orange. Taught by Heather Johnson. Give your child a week they will never forget as they discover the young artist within. Heather Johnson’s love of teaching and art comes together as she takes your child on a journey where they explore and learn about the techniques and promise of five very different art media:  Painting, Printing, 3D Sculpture, Collage, and Clay. Each day, your child will come home with a new work of art.

Camp 1:  June 15-19, 2026 – 1st-3rd Graders,
                    9:00am – 1:00pm (Includes 11:00 break, snacks provided)

Camp 3:  July 6-10, 2026 – 1st-3rd Graders
                    9:00am – 1:00pm (Includes 11:00 break, snacks provided)

Note: Unfortunately, camps 2 & 4 can no longer run. If your child is between grades 3-6 and wanted to participate they can sign up for Camps 1 & 3 after an initial conversation with parents. They could work separately with the Instructor on their projects as long as they understand that the other students will be younger.
