Beginner Wheel Throwing, Ceramics with Phillip Strauss | 4 Week Class
THURSDAYS, 5:30 - 7:30 PM | July 16th - August 6th | $240 per student

In this four-week beginner wheel-throwing course, you'll learn the fundamentals of pottery in a welcoming, creative studio environment while experiencing the magic of the potter’s wheel for yourself. Designed for students with little or no prior experience, this class introduces the essential techniques used by ceramic artists every day. You'll learn how to center clay, pull walls, trim forms, and create functional pieces such as bowls, cups, and small vessels. Along the way, you'll gain a deeper understanding of clay as a material, including how it is recycled and reclaimed within a working studio.

As your confidence grows, you'll explore glazing techniques that bring color, surface, and personality to your work. By the end of the course, you'll leave with several finished ceramic pieces and the skills needed to continue working independently in a community ceramics studio.

  • Classes combine demonstrations, hands-on practice, and individualized instruction in The Art Center's public ceramics studio. You'll work alongside fellow students, learn proper studio practices, and discover why wheel throwing is equal parts craft, concentration, and creative play. Be prepared to get a little messy—it's part of the fun.

  • The studio provides shared tools, but having your own basic kit ensures you'll always have what you need during class.

    Required Tools

    • Throwing sponge

    • Wooden rib

    • Rubber rib

    • Needle tool

    • Wire cutter

    • Trimming tools

A beginner pottery tool kit is available for purchase through The Art Center and includes most of these essential tools.

Ceramics Date Night with Phillip Strauss
FRIDAY, August 28th| 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM | $45 per student

Looking for a date night you'll actually remember?

Spend an evening getting your hands dirty and discovering the magic of the potter's wheel. Whether you're celebrating an anniversary, planning a first date, catching up with friends, or simply trying something new, Ceramic Date Night offers a creative experience that's equal parts fun, relaxing, and surprisingly addictive.

Your evening begins with a tour of our ceramics studio and gallery, followed by a demonstration from one of The Art Center's talented Resident Artists. Then it's your turn. With plenty of guidance and encouragement, you'll sit down at the wheel and create your own pottery from clay.

Most participants spend about 90 minutes on the wheel and create two to three pieces during their first session. No experience is necessary—just a willingness to try something new and have fun.

Once your pieces are complete, you'll choose from more than 60 beautiful glazes to give your work its final color and character. Our staff will then fire and finish your pottery, and 4-6 weeks later, you'll return to pick up your handmade creations—lasting reminders of a memorable evening.

Who Is It For?

Despite the name, Ceramic Date Night isn't just for couples. Bring a spouse, partner, friend, parent, sibling, coworker, or come on your own. The real goal is to spend a few hours making something with your hands, sharing some laughs, and discovering a creative side you may not have known you had.

    WORKING WITH ART MATERIALS
The materials and tools used in the our studios are safe if handled correctly. However, exposure to any material through the lungs, mouth or skin can be harmful. Clay and glaze dust are the most common hazards in our studios. In addition, many metal oxides and metal compounds used in glazes are toxic in their raw forms.

All students must take precautions to avoid lung damage. Wear a respirator and gloves if you mix glazes, stains, or oxides.

If you must sand or scrape bone-dry clay or glaze, do so outside and wear a particle mask.

Wear a particle mask when working with chemicals.

Wear gloves when handling raw glaze materials and washes. Many of these materials contain heavy metals such as copper, cobalt, and manganese.

Do not pour excess glaze, plaster, slip, or rinse water down the drains in the Drawing Studio or the restrooms! They are pollutants and could cause drainage problems.

Any use of plaster should be monitored by the instructor or a trained staff member. Only dedicated containers may be used.

Your instructor or Arts Center staff can advise where to safely dispose of glaze water, plaster, or other materials.

    _____________________________

    EQUIPMENT
Kilns, wheels, and any other studio equipment are both delicate and potentially hazardous. Observe the following precautions to avoid accidents and injury:

No student or instructor is permitted to be in the designated kiln area for any reason. This section of the studio is for Staff Only.

Do not place anything on kiln lids. The lids are fragile and often very hot. They are not intended to be used as tables or storage areas.

Do not use the slab roller or extruder without having received instruction from an instructor or member of staff.

Turn all electric wheels to the “off” position after use. DO NOT move a wheel from forward to reverse before the motor has completely stopped moving; power off and switch to forward or reverse, then turn back on.

Position cords and foot pedals out of the way of foot traffic at all times.

When using studio equipment, long hair MUST be tied back; scarves and jewelry (including but not lmiited to rings, bracelets, and necklaces) must be removed.

  • GLAZES
All glazes provided by The Arts Center in Orange are food safe when applied correctly and fired properly.

If you have any questions about the quality or safety of any studio-provided glaze, please ask an instructor, monitor, or staff member.

    KILNS AND FIRING
Every reasonable effort will be made to fire work, both bisque and glaze.

The Arts Center requires a two-week turnaround time for pick-up of final pieces after the last class session.

For every firing, each kiln will be as full of ware as possible. If a ware is left out of a firing due to space considerations, an effort will be made to ensure the ware is included in the next firing.

Anyone wishing to fire work in our kilns MUST leave an indelible identifying mark on their ware that will survive bisque and glaze firings, or their work will NOT be fired.

The firing sequence begins with the bisque firing (Cone 06). The bone-dry ware is to be placed on the shelves marked “ready for bisque”. The piece should be placed as deep on the bisque-ware shelf as possible, to leave room for other people’s work.

After the piece has been bisque fired, it will be placed on a bisque ware shelf. The student should glaze the piece as soon as possible or remove it from the premises until returning for glazing later.

After the piece has been glazed, it should be placed on the glazed ware shelves according to height and, again, as far back as possible, leaving room for other pieces. Glazed pieces will be loaded for the glaze firing (Cone 6) as soon as there are enough pieces for a firing.

After the final firing, all completed pieces should be removed from the studio as soon as possible.

Each studio user is responsible for their work. Unclaimed pieces cannot be held or stored indefinitely. Remaining pieces may be discarded, destroyed, or donated to The Arts Center in Orange.

The Arts Center in Orange, Inc. cannot be responsible for lost or unclaimed work nor for undesired or inconsistent results, kiln accidents, or work that is damaged.

Generally, only work produced at The Arts Center in Orange will be fired in the studio’s kilns. Only the Executive Director may allow the firing of work brought in from outside the studio. Approval for such a firing must include an assurance that the work is cone 6 clay.

Anyone requesting the firing of work made outside of the studio will be responsible for any damage to the kiln, kiln furniture, shelves, and equipment, and to other pieces, caused by the firing of that work.

  • STUDIO TIME, LOCKERS, AND SHELF SPACE FOR STUDENTS
    CERAMICS:
