Utilizing highly tactile materials, Stephanie Germosen Salazar creates work to communicate the urgency of remembering under conditions of displacement. These objects address notions of geographical belonging, visibility, and spirituality as they relate to cultural identity. By shifting the emphasis from the immaterial to the material, Germosen Salazar repurposes objects of enigmatic origin, giving disembodied histories physical form. Her practice retraces memory, gathers time, and mends new moments that reference both the past and the future. 

Germosen Salazar is currently investigating the many ways fantasy can slip into everyday reality, resorting to magical realism as a means of keeping memory afloat. She views this as a survival tool widely used by Caribbean and Latin American people living in the diaspora. Through reconstructing moments that have been obscured, she creates an atmosphere of defamiliarization in which materials, forms, and ideas slip into one another.
